A Hasidic True Crime Story. An astounding 300.000 people attended the funeral of Rabbi Schik – an admired American ultra-Orthodox Rabbi. Unbeknownst to his followers, Rabbi Schik was also the leader of a transatlantic crime organization which established an extreme and segregated cult spanning between Brooklyn and Israel. While female members were forced into underage marriages and sustained sexual assaults, the money was flowing into the Rabbi’s own pockets. This corrupt culture prevailed for decades, with no one ever daring to expose the painful truth – until now.

women in Israel do not have the right to control their own bodies. A woman who wants to terminate her pregnancy still has to go through a committee and receive approval for a decision about her body and future.
The Jewish womb in Israel has a role. A demographic-national role. From the medical establishment to the government with its various arms, men still decide and impose control over women’s wombs.
In the film, women break the silence and tell of the wound, trauma, shame, and pain that accompany the decision to have an abortion.
Through personal stories and rare archives, the complex, discriminatory, and rigid system that controls the lives and fates of many women is revealed.

Strange Birds / Impact Lab 2023

Director – Shaked Orbach, Producer – Dan Shadur, Impact Producer – Inbal-Rotem Sagiv

A phone call wakes me up in the early morning and sends me to save my older brother. Again. After another entanglement, I realize I can no longer ignore the problems that accompany him, and threaten to take over my life as well. I use the camera to get answers from my family, and the wall of silence begins to melt. Through a series of events — some amusing, others dramatic and unsettling — I realize for the first time how my complicated relationships with my family, and especially with my mother, were shaped by a single unspoken expression in our home — autism. Strange Birds is an intimate film that reveals an untold story about special parenting and the children who grow up in its shadow.
