Introduction
DoCommunity - Filmmakers for the Community

CoPro - Documentary Marketing Foundation (R.A) is Israel’s premier platform for the pluralistic voices and cultural dialogue of Israeli documentary filmmakers. Above all, CoPro believes in affording equal opportunity to filmmakers from all sectors of Israeli society. Therefore, much emphasis is placed on the artist’s social responsibility to further the fundamental principle of community development.

DoCommunity is the realization of this principle.
The DoCommunity outreach program genuinely aims in a relevant way to connect filmmakers with the marginal sectors of their society, in this way to bridge social and cultural gaps. As a non-profit organization, CoPro aids filmmakers lacking in financial resources. In return, the filmmakers’ aim is to give back to the community through the films they make.

Russian and Ethiopian immigrants and Arab communities have been identified by CoPro as large peripheral Israeli communities, possessing their own vibrant and diverse sub-cultures. DoCommunity therefore assists filmmakers in hosting special screenings of their films for these communities with subtitles in Russian, Amharic or Arabic. The screenings are accompanied by open forums led by the film’s director, allowing both community and filmmaker to listen and learn from one another.

The program was launched on October 18, 2006, in the village of Daburia’s new community centre. There CoPro screened Uri Rosenwax’s film, ”The Film Class”, which relates the story of a group of black Bedouin girls, who through making their first film discover and explore aspects of their past that were previously taboo. CoPro screened Tal Hakim’s film ”Tali Fahima Crosses the Lines”, in Kfar Ara’s Music Center. Both films were especially translated with subtitles into Arabic for the occasions.

CoPro also cooperated with “Kehilat Esh David” in Ashdod and “Machanayim” in Ma’aleh Adumim, two Russian cultural groups who work at renewing Jewish identity and bridging the gap between the Russian community and their Israeli counterparts. It is for this purpose the films chosen that were screened there deal mainly with the past and present history of the various ethnic communities in Israel, such as Tali Shemesh’s film ”The Cemetery Club”, which was especially translated into Russian and screened on February 6 to the community members. Other screenings were ”Ashkenaz” in Kfar Kara, ”Amos OZ- The Nature of Dreams’” by Masha and Yonatal Zur in Taibe etc. In 2010 CoPro screened at the Tel-Chai College to Israeli Jewish and Arab students the film “Israel Ltd.” by Mor Lushi, at the Jasr A’Zarka Community Center the film “Nine Years Later” by Sheri Azuz and Yifat Keidar.

DocEUmmunity provides equal opportunities for filmmakers from all sectors, cultures and religions throughout Israel enabling its diverse voices to be equally represented and expressed. This carries the message of Israeli filmmakers to the screens of millions of people around the world and promotes a sincere and in-depth cultural exchange.
This project aims to further build cooperation between Israel and Europe in the field of film for the creative development and mutual benefit of all parties.

DocEUmmunity represents one of the defining elements of the “The Israel Market for International Co-Production”.
